Want to increase your Powerball secondary prizes 2, 3, 4, 5, or even 10 times? Who doesn’t, right? All you have to do is add the Power Play feature to your ticket: if you win any of the secondary prizes, you have the chance to boost your winnings. Here’s how the Powerball Power Play works!
What is the Power Play feature?
The Power Play is the multiplier of the US Powerball lottery. This means that it can increase the secondary prizes in the game for those who add it to their ticket.
The multiplier is optional and it comes at an additional fee of $1.00 per ticket when Powerball tickets are physically purchased at retailers.
It only applies to secondary prizes, but it can increase them significantly. Here’s what Power Play can do for you:
It can double the $1 million second prize.
It can increase all the other secondary Powerball prizes 2, 3, 4, or 5 times.
When the Powerball jackpot is lower than $150 million, there is also a 10x Power Play added to the game.
However, the Power Play feature does not apply to the jackpot.
How does the Power Play work?
When you add the Power Play multiplier to your Powerball ticket, you have the chance to win more in the game, specifically 2, 3, 4, 5, or even 10 times more. Here’s how it works: all the secondary prizes are increased according to the drawn Power Play number (except the second tier).
While the Power Play feature does not apply to the jackpot, it can double the $1 million second prize in the game. Below, you can see just how much prizes can grow with the Power Play.
|Prize Divisions||Match||Prize||Prize w/ Power Play|
|2nd Prize||5||$1 million||$2 million|
|5th Prize||3+PB||$200||$400 – $2000|
|6th Prize||3||$10||$20 – $100|
|7th Prize||2+PB||$10||$20 – $100|
|8th Prize||1+PB||$4||$8 – $40|
|9th Prize||0+PB||$4||$8 – $20|
All you have to do is tick the box in the play grid and you are in for a boost on your prizes.
How is the Power Play chosen?
When you add the Power Play option to your ticket, you do not choose an actual number to play with, you simply select the option. The Power Play value is drawn along with the other Powerball numbers from a separate barrel.
If you win any secondary prize and have selected the Power Play on your entry, you will see your prize being multiplied by the Power Play value. Except the second prize of $1 million which is automatically doubled, no matter the value of the Power Play.
Also, depending on the amount of the jackpot, there are 4 or 5 types of balls in the barrel.
When the Powerball jackpot is lower than $150 million, the 10x Power Play multiplier is added in the game. The multiplier can be 2, 3, 4, 5, or 10. Here are the odds for each of them being drawn:
|Power Play||No. of Balls||Odds|
|2x||24||1 in 1,79|
|3x||13||1 in 3,3|
|4x||3||1 in 14,3|
|5x||2||1 in 21,5|
|10x||1||1 in 43|
When the Powerball jackpot is larger than $150 million, the Power Play is drawn from a range of 2 to 4. Here are the odds of each of them being drawn in this set of balls:
|Power Play||No. of Balls||Odds|
|2x||24||1 in 2|
|3x||13||1 in 3,2|
|4x||3||1 in 14|
|5x||2||1 in 21|
